Certainly poorly paid (Some just $50 a month!) for their skills. That’s low even by Siem Reap standards.
And sadly under-appreciated by most Cambodians according to all the dancers I spoke to.
But it’s not just the low salary and the under-appreciation, it’s also that they see many of their country-folk looking down on them.
No money, no status.
If it wasn’t for foreigners paying to watch, Cambodian dance would have all but disappeared… these are not my words, but the words of the dancers.
