A Rice Ruckus

20170128-dsc_1067

The farmer is angry.

It’s his rice they are eating, but they are not his bovine. They belong over the ditch.

It’s not the first time it has happened, the farmer says.

So he sends them on their way and across the irrigation canal with a yell and a stick.

It is here that they belong. But the owner, another rice farmer, knows his cattle stray, but he does nothing. He prefers someone else feeds them for free…

A worker gathers the stalks after the rice harvest.

The straw is then carted off and formed into huge stacks, and used to feed the cows and buffalo in the dry season. (It’s not great feed, however, being low in digestible energy, crude protein and calcium)

It’s hot work, so they start at around 7.00AM and take lunch at 10. Work starts again at 2.00PM.20170128-dsc_1063
