Cham people are plentiful in rural Battambang. Overall the Cambodian Cham population is estimated at 220,000.

‘The Chams, or Cham people are an ethnic group of Austronesian origin in Southeast Asia. Their contemporary population, a diaspora is concentrated between the Kampong Cham Province in Cambodia and Phan Rang–Tháp Chàm, Phan Thiết, Ho Chi Minh City and An Giang Province in Central Vietnam.

The majority of Cham in Vietnam are Hindu while their Cambodian counterparts are largely Muslim. (88%)’
