Work Vehicle

Prey Veng, Cambodia

  1. They may not own the ‘tractor’ and are farm labourers rather than landowners. Tough, tough work that pays, as you say, subsistence level wages. And the work is not year-round.

Even if they own some land the plot is probably too small to give a decent return.

Prey Veng, where this was shot, provides Cambodia with much of its rice, sugar cane and cashew nuts. But it is poor. The number of people living below the poverty line is around 53%. That’s much, much worse than the national average.

The total population is just under a million and 80% are farmers, and 14% are fishermen. Not much money in small-scale fishing either.
