A Battambang Trot

DSC_0455-3

It has been more than 13 years since I was last in Battambang.

Then, tiny ponies and carts featured on clay-coloured dusty roads as they clip-clopped loads, usually firewood, across the countryside.

These ponies really are small- the photo above doesn’t show their true size well- and they seem to be worked hard.

Now many of the roads, at least those in and near the city have been sealed. Does that make life easier or more difficult for the ponies?

  1. Ugh. It hurts me to see this. I am way too soft-hearted toward the animals. But I guess they are used to this? And what would the people do without the horses? Conflicted thoughts….
