    • The Buddha told his monks that they should use cloth that was no longer needed because it was old or soiled. They then washed and dyed the cloth using spices such as saffron and turmeric. I presume they wore robes then rather than shirts and trousers because this old cloth wouldn’t usually have been wide enough to make into trousers and shirts.

      Today, monks can wear several different colours and I believe in Southeast Asia it is simply a matter of personal choice as to which one they choose.
